Back in Corfu for the second half of the hiking season, I was greeted by thunderstorms and rain on a biblical scale.
I don’t mind particularly mind the rain – it doesn’t last long and keeps the landscape verdant and beautiful – but the big downside of Corfu at this time of the year is the wasps.
As the grapes ripen on the vines, the wasps move in, feast on the grapes, get drunk and then waft around in a dozy but deeply irritating way. Burning greek coffee grounds in an ashtray usually gets rid of them but, if you get stung, the locals tell me that the answer is to apply vinegar or lemon to counteract the alkaline wasp sting.
